Finding spirituality

Article reads: If you want to understand the stars you will need to use a telescope. If you want to understand a molecule you will need to use a microscope. If you want to understand the ocean eventually you will need to get wet. If you want to understand the spiritual nature of the world you will need a spiritual practice. In the center of all the philosophy and science that explains and debates the existence of the soul and God lays one simple truth: spirituality is an experience. It is a journey that no one can take for you. It is an understanding that no one can give you.

Rush on Darwin’s evolution

Limbaugh says: Well, the only thing that some people have with Darwin is that they believe evolution cannot explain creation.  I happen to agree with that.  I don’t think evolution can explain creation.  And something had to evolve from something.  Where does something come from?  It didn’t evolve from nothing.  Something had to put it there.  It had to be created.  Darwin tries to argue against creation, and it gives the anti-creationists ammo, Darwin does.  I think it actually limits inquiry and curiosity, contrary to promoting it.

More on survival of the fittest

Opinion reads: “Survival of the fittest and natural selection” are things that I believe should apply more in our daily lives, just as they do in the animal and plant world. I understand that this opinion is probably going to be frowned upon but humour me as I attempt to paraphrase Herbert Spencer and Charles Darwin.

Possible life on another planet

Article reads: The possibility of life on other planets has been a staple of science fiction for decades. Now that possibility has taken a step closer to reality as astronomers say they have found a planet orbiting a star a mere 20 light-years away that has the right conditions for life to exist.

This year, the featured speakers include energy healer Donna Eden (with clinical psychologist David Feinstein, Ph.D.), mind-body expert Joan Borysenko, Ph.D. and healthcare advocate Len Saputo, M.D.

What genetics can’t tell us

Article reads: For some time, the pursuit of the human genome has convinced Americans we are on the verge of discovering the genetic causes — and cures — for everything. This hope has been boosted by the general scientism (worshiping at the mantel of what is supposedly scientific) of American culture, and mythical — often faked-up — descriptions of identical twins reared apart who are perfect replicas of one another. … The Human Genome Project has actually tilted our understanding in the opposite way: telling us just how limited is the role of genetics in producing human outcomes. To begin with, researchers were shocked to discover how much DNA on our chromosomes is unspoken for — that is, not arranged into specific gene sites associated with identifiable traits. Instead, the vast preponderance of DNA apparently regulates the expression of genes in ways so complex and unpredictable as to be ultimately unspecifiable.

Fact checking in Darwin debate

Article reads: It always amazes me how if you want to bash intelligent design, Discovery Institute, or Darwin doubters generally, you can pretty much say anything you want, however ridiculous, and everyone in the Darwin choir will sing hallelujah and never bother to fact check what you say.

Social Darwinism reinvented

Article reads: The new version of Social Darwinism is very different. It provides a powerful, evolutionary justification for social equality and a sophisticated theory for how to achieve it. It also holds that evolution is a fast-paced process that is happening all around us. Not only can genetic change take place in a single generation, but cultural change counts as an evolutionary process in its own right. Even when evolution has made things that are hard to change, we need to know about these more enduring aspects of human nature so that we can design our current environments accordingly. We design zoos so that wild animals will feel at home so why not our own environments?

Blind hubris and gambling compulsion drives belief in evolution

Article reads: Intriguingly, while many people believe religious reasons to be the driving factor, for many people it appears that fear of randomness and uncontrolled circumstances is one of the major motivations for people to deny the theory of evolution.
