Strictly from an evolutionary perspective, humans and other animals are not designed to have and raise children; they are instead designed to maximize their reproductive success (representation of their genes in the next generation). It is true that the most usual and direct means of increasing our reproductive success is having and raising our own genetic children, which is why parents almost never kill their own genetic children. Sometimes they do, however, if doing so increases their overall reproductive success.
