Something to consider: Theists commonly assume that arbitrary or relative values, such as those mentioned by Hawking or other atheists, self-destruct without the standard provided by scripture. However, our society already adheres to and accepts values that are not scripture-derived. In our society, a secular society, our values are derived from Locke-like philosophy of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Those actions that violate these principles are illegal (low-value), and those that promote these principles are encouraged (high-value). Hence, people adhering to quite different views on “value” consent to abide by values as defined by the rule of law. Hawking’s suggestion is not only possible, but our society is practical proof of its success.
